Hello! My name is Bee and welcome to my little kitchen in the heart of Tiong Bahru, Singapore. I’m a self-taught cook and food photographer, originally from Malaysia and now living in Singapore.
The Food and the Recipes
You should know that I am totally obsessed with food. I relax by looking at pictures of food. I tear through recipe books. Every time I put a morsel of food in my mouth, I’m inspired to create a new recipe. I’ve been cooking since I was a student in London – looking back, I should have known that something was up when I spent most of my time watching cooking shows and writing down recipes, instead of studying finance like I was supposed to!
You will also notice that most of my recipes cater to special diets. This is because most of my family members and friends are either gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian. Personally, I eat a 90% plant-based diet.
I believe in eating whole and unprocessed foods, and that food should always fun – fun to eat and fun to make. And that the more we know about what’s in our food, the more we’ll appreciate what a gift it is. I hope that my recipes, photos and tips will inspire you to venture into your own kitchen and give you the confidence to bake and cook your own food from scratch!
I owe the degree of moderation and balance in my diet to a dedicated yoga practice, which in turn has made me curious about what’s in our food and the ingredients, as well as holistic health practices like Ayurveda and food nutrition. It can probably get a little nerdy, but still I hope that you find this information helpful!
The Kitchen and the Journey Here
Growing up in Malaysia, studying and working in London and Singapore, marrying an Australian/British and travelling extensively throughout South East Asia – the food I like to eat and cook reflects this diversity. (In Malaysian & Singaporean slang, we jokingly call this “rojak” – which means “mixed up”, and it also happens to refer to a traditional fruit & vegetable salad dish!)
I play and experiment in my little kitchen, which is situated in the area of Tiong Bahru, one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore. In recent years the estate has become more modern, but traces of its original charm still remains.
Living in Singapore, I often feel like I live in the cross-currents of many different cultures, generations and now technology. But I also like to think that essentially, things haven’t really changed that much from the good ol’ days when Singapore was a trading and shipping port – where people, goods and ideas flowed through endlessly.
